Product Description

90WS "A vivid style, bursting with blackberry and black cherry flavors, playing against tobacco and wet earth notes, finishing under a veil of fine tannins. Best from 2014 through 2018." - Wine Spectator, 90 points!

"A charismatic and flavourful red – charge your glasses! A flavourful wine with a dramatic mouthfeel. Notes of strawberries and cherries come charging in on a palate of spicy raspberry attack. Grab it by the horns! An intense nose of strawberries, cherries, with hints of sumac and fennel seed. On the palate, an explosive attack of spicy berry fruit flavours, presented on a moorishly, textured palate. Can drink it up now, or cellar for 5-8 years." - Winery

"Matt 'Gantos' Gant and John 'JR' Retsas are two mates with a lifelong commitment to making kick-arse booze at their winery, 'Home of the Brave', in the Barossa. These are wines with flavour, texture and a splash of funk, made with the best fruit from unique patches of the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Arneis, Nebbiolo, Trincadeira, Montepulciano – it’s an eclectic bunch of varietals and blends, but that’s what we're are all about. This is booze crafted with a flair for creativity, a twist of innovation – and a sensitivity for tradition. That’s right, it’s not all Touriga/Cabernet blends, we’re just as mad about making the best Shiraz in the Barossa Valley. Through years of dedicated truffle-snuffling around the region we’ve picked out the best bits of dirt for this noble variety: these are the gems in our vault. First Drop is about life, flavour, and fun – wines to drink! You might have noticed that we have a pretty artistic approach to our packaging too. Whether it’s the Hogarth-inspired Mother’s Ruin illustration or the funked-up street art on the 2% Shiraz, this is booze that looks as good as it tastes." - Winery

Vintage 2012 was a tale of hope and glory. Good rains throughout much of 2011 setup vineyards with good soil and vine health going into the growing season. Warmer and drier conditions through October and November followed, which led to strong and healthy shoot growth, and by December, below average crops were evident due to less and smaller bunches. We were full of hope. January and February were characteristically dry, but continued the trend of below-average temperatures. There was a rain event in early March, however it didn’t cause any disease issues, and actually refreshed many vineyards and allowed them to ripen steadily. Not surprisingly the cool ripening conditions delivered fruit with intense aromas and flavours, and allowed every site to show its full potential and individuality in the resulting wines. 2012 was a privileged vintage. After the mother of all harvests the previous year, we were rewarded with outstanding quality across all varieties, whilst working with old friends (TSW and JP) in our new "Home of the Brave" winery. It will sit among the greatest vintages, perhaps the most glorious! Truly blessed and thankful.
